Doheny Eye Institute, Headquarters and Research Labs

Pasadena, CA

As a nonprofit ophthalmic research institution, established in 1947, the Doheny Eye Institute has maintained its reputation as a top-ranked care and research organization dedicated to the conservation, improvement and restoration of human eyesight. A few years following the affiliation between UCLA health and Doheny Eye Institute, the Institute purchased a new office building situated just east of the iconic Rose Bowl and walking distance from Old Pasadena. SWA was tasked with designing headquarters and primary research labs for both Doheny Eye Institute and UCLA Stein Eye Institute scientists.

The headquarters offers over 32,000 sq. ft. of research and specialized labs. Interior RO/ultra-pure water mechanical room, two cold rooms, 16 bio and fume hood rooms, dark rooms, laser labs, and autoclaves. Project features a gym, state of the art data center, elegant history library, pre-function lounge, 225 seat presentation room, several medium to large conference rooms. Additionally, the DEI campus has upgraded fire alarm and sprinkler systems, all new HVAC system, exterior covered parking solar panels throughout the parking lot and re-developed landscaping, walkways, nature paths, and entry gates. Set against the backdrop of Pasadena’s Rose Bowl and foothills, this new headquarters and research lab provides a new and long-lasting upgrade to an already unique and elegant building.
