SWA Architects was selected to help expand and renovate this state-of-the-art outpatient women’s health and imaging center for UCLA Health. To maintain full operations within the existing portion, SWA Architects and our design team worked in close collaboration with UCLA Health to complete this 6,400 SF OSHPD-3 facility into three (3) phases.

Phase 1 includes the expansion of the clinic into the existing exterior patio area of the existing coffee shop and the remodeling of the coffee shop space into a patient waiting, registration administration office space.

Phase 2A includes the remodeling of staff and patient toilets, exams rooms, Mammography room, reading rooms and support spaces with connecting corridor.

Phase 2B includes the addition of a new MRI suite and corresponding ancillary support spaces and the interior materials and color refinishing of the connecting corridor and existing MRI and Mammography rooms.

SWA was faced with several challenges brought on by existing site conditions, all of which needed to be addressed while the other portions remained in full operation. One major challenge was overcoming the existing site conditions, which included expanding the clinic into the multiple level existing parking structure located right behind the ground floor retail space. The parking structure’s structural system required extensive reinforcement in order to accommodate the new MRI. The existing building's HVAC system was also upgraded to meet OSHPD-3 requirements for this new imaging center but locating the new system’s components in the alley behind the structure. Custom acoustical & vibration isolation assemblies were also designed and installed beneath the MRI suites to minimize sound/vibration transmission to the patient area and MRI during operation. SWA Architects and our design team were able to create a practical and viable solution.
