Veterans Administration, Critical Care Unit
Los Angeles, CA
The Medical Intensive Care Unit and Coronary Care Units had not undergone any extensive updating or remodeling since the building was built. SWA was retained under an open-end contract to design a new unit which is geared to increase efficiency by improving the work-flow, addressing infection control issues, and providing greater staffing flexibility.
The design response is a 36-bed Critical Care Unit on the 5th floor of a fully operational hospital. This project was multi-phased with the first area of 18-beds targeted for surgery related conditions, the second area was then prepared for Medical and Coronary Intensive Care. A new color palette, interiors, space reconfiguration, central nursing stations, electrical upgrades, mechanical and HVAC upgrades, as well as new equipment position the VA to better serve its changing population and patient’s needs.
